Common Denture Emergencies
Dentures are designed to withstand daily use, but accidents happen. Whether your denture cracked while eating, broke from a fall, or a tooth popped off, the dental team can typically restore it in a single visit. Here are the most common denture emergencies we treat:
Cracked or Fractured Base
The acrylic base of a denture can crack from dropping it on a hard surface, biting down on something unexpectedly hard, or simply from years of flexing during chewing. A midline fracture—a crack running down the center of the denture—is the most common break pattern. Do not try to glue the pieces together yourself. Household adhesives create an uneven surface, alter the fit, and make professional repair more difficult.
Loose or Missing Denture Tooth
Individual teeth on dentures are bonded to the acrylic base and can detach from wear, impact, or adhesive failure. dentists can replace a missing tooth on your denture by matching the shade, shape, and position of the original. If you have the missing tooth, bring it—dentists can often rebond it directly.
Ill-Fitting Denture
Your jawbone and gum tissue change shape over time, causing a once well-fitting denture to become loose. An ill-fitting denture causes sore spots, difficulty chewing, and can lead to oral infections. dentists can reline or rebase the denture to restore its fit without fabricating an entirely new prosthesis.
Broken Clasp (Partial Dentures)
The metal or flexible clasps on partial dentures grip your natural teeth to keep the partial in place. When a clasp breaks, the partial loses retention and becomes difficult to wear. dentists can repair or replace broken clasps to restore function.
Same-Day Denture Repair Process
the in-house dental laboratory enables us to complete most denture repairs while you wait. Here's the process:
- Evaluation: We examine the denture and your mouth to assess the damage and identify any contributing factors like poor fit or bite issues.
- Repair Plan: We explain the repair needed, provide a cost estimate, and get your approval before starting.
- Laboratory Repair: Our technician performs the repair using professional-grade acrylic, matching the color and contour of the original denture. For simple repairs, this takes 1 to 2 hours. Complex repairs may take a full day.
- Fit Check: Once repaired, we have you try the denture in and make any necessary adjustments to the fit and bite.
For most standard repairs—cracks, fractures, and single tooth replacements—you'll leave local emergency dental clinics with your repaired denture the same day.
Types of Denture Repairs
Crack Repair
For clean cracks where both halves are intact, we bond the pieces together using specialized acrylic cement, then reinforce the repair with additional acrylic material. The repaired area is polished smooth and the denture is returned to its original strength.
Tooth Replacement
When a tooth is missing or damaged, we select a matching replacement tooth from our extensive shade and shape inventory. The new tooth is bonded into position and adjusted for proper bite alignment. This repair typically takes 1 to 2 hours.
Reline
A reline adds new acrylic material to the tissue-facing surface of the denture, restoring intimate contact with your gums. providers offer both hard relines (permanent, lasts 1 to 2 years) and soft relines (cushioned, ideal for sensitive gums). Same-day chairside relines are available for urgent cases.
Rebase
A rebase replaces the entire acrylic base while keeping the existing teeth. This is a more extensive procedure than a reline and is recommended when the base material has deteriorated significantly but the teeth are still in good condition.
When Dentures Need Replacement vs Repair
While most denture damage can be repaired, some situations call for a new denture:
- The denture has been repaired multiple times in the same area
- The acrylic base is severely discolored, porous, or warped
- Multiple teeth are worn, chipped, or missing
- The denture is more than 7 to 10 years old and no longer fits well despite relining
- Significant jawbone changes have made the original design obsolete
they'll always recommend the most conservative approach first. If repair can restore function and aesthetics safely, they'll repair it.
Emergency Reline Services
If your denture is causing pain from poor fit, dentists can perform an emergency reline to provide immediate relief. A temporary soft reline cushions the tissue-bearing surface and can be completed in about an hour. This provides comfort while you schedule a more permanent solution. For patients who have recently had tooth extractions, an immediate reline adapts the denture to the post-extraction tissue changes.
Cost of Emergency Denture Repair
Emergency denture repair costs vary by the type and complexity of damage:
- Simple crack repair: $100 to $200
- Single tooth replacement: $100 to $250
- Clasp repair: $150 to $300
- Chairside reline: $200 to $400
- Full rebase: $300 to $500
most clinics accept most dental insurance plans, Medi-Cal (Denti-Cal), and offer payment plans for uninsured patients. Visit the insurance page for complete details.
