Insurance & Payment Options
A dental emergency is stressful enough without worrying about how to pay. San Diego emergency dentists in our network accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and offer flexible financing so cost is never a barrier to the care you need.
Insurance Plans Accepted by Our Providers
Emergency dentists in our San Diego network accept many of the most widely used dental insurance plans in California. Even if your plan isn't listed below, there's a good chance a provider can work with it — call (619) 555-1234 and we'll connect you with a provider who accepts your coverage.
Don't see your insurance listed? Many providers also accept PPO and indemnity plans as out-of-network providers. Your plan may still cover a significant portion of emergency treatment. Most providers will file your claim directly so you don't have to deal with paperwork while you're recovering.
Medi-Cal / Denti-Cal Coverage
Many emergency dentists in our network accept Medi-Cal (Denti-Cal) for emergency dental services. California's Medi-Cal program covers a range of emergency dental treatments for eligible adults and children, including:
- Emergency extractions
- Treatment for dental infections and abscesses
- Emergency X-rays and diagnostic services
- Medically necessary root canals (with authorization)
- Incision and drainage of dental abscesses
Many Medi-Cal patients aren't aware of the full range of dental benefits available to them. the dental team has extensive experience navigating Denti-Cal authorizations and can help determine exactly what your plan covers.

Common Emergency Procedure Costs
Without insurance, typical ranges include:
| Emergency exam + X-rays | $75 – $150 |
| Simple extraction | $150 – $300 |
| Root canal (anterior) | $500 – $900 |
| Temporary filling/crown | $100 – $250 |
| Abscess drainage | $200 – $400 |
These are estimates. Your actual cost depends on the complexity of your case. We always discuss costs before starting treatment.
CareCredit Financing
Many emergency dental providers accept CareCredit to offer flexible financing options for patients who need to spread the cost of treatment over time. CareCredit works like a healthcare credit card, and you can apply at the dental office — approval often takes just minutes.
Available Plans
- 6-month promotional financing — 0% interest if paid in full within 6 months
- 12-month promotional financing — 0% interest if paid in full within 12 months
- 24- to 60-month extended plans — fixed monthly payments with reduced APR
CareCredit can be used to cover your deductible, co-pays, or the full cost of treatment if you don't have insurance. You can also use it for follow-up care at any CareCredit-accepting dental, medical, or vision provider.
Quick Example
A $900 root canal on a 12-month 0% interest plan comes out to just $75/month — less than most cell phone bills.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance & Payment
Does dental insurance cover emergency visits?
Yes, most dental insurance plans cover emergency exams and X-rays at 80–100% of allowed charges. Treatments like extractions, root canals, and temporary restorations are typically covered at 50–80%, depending on your specific plan. Emergency visits usually don't require pre-authorization — your insurer understands that dental emergencies can't be scheduled in advance.
I have insurance but forgot my card. Can I still be seen?
Absolutely. As long as you can provide your insurance company name and your member ID or Social Security number, dentists can look up your coverage electronically. Don't let a misplaced card stop you from getting treatment — they'll sort out the billing details while we focus on getting you out of pain.
Will I owe anything out of pocket even with insurance?
In most cases, yes. Dental insurance typically covers a percentage of the treatment cost, and you're responsible for the remaining co-pay or coinsurance. You may also have a deductible that needs to be met. they'll explain your estimated out-of-pocket cost before we begin any treatment so there are no surprises.
I've already maxed out my annual dental benefits. What are my options?
If you've reached your annual maximum, you're essentially self-pay for additional treatment. providers offer cash-pay discounts, CareCredit financing, and in-house payment plans to make this manageable. Some patients also choose to schedule follow-up treatment (like a permanent crown) at the start of the next benefit year when their annual maximum resets.
Do you accept dental discount plans (like Dental Savings Plans)?
most clinics accept some dental discount plans on a case-by-case basis. These aren't insurance — they're membership programs that offer reduced fees at participating dentists. Call us with your plan details and dentists can let you know if we participate. Even if we don't, our self-pay rates are competitive and our payment plans are available to all patients.
